What should I do if the fire alarm sounds?

Guidance if the fire alarm sounds in your University accommodation.

The fire alarm is a continuous sounding alarm to warn students to vacate the building immediately for their safety.

University accommodation has fire safety devices installed in bedrooms, corridors, kitchens, bathrooms and communal areas. These are activated by smoke or by heat (in a kitchen).

The systems are designed to protect you and sometimes can be activated accidentally due to cooking or excessive hairspray / deodorant. We will help you to understand how the systems work to keep everyone safe.

Smoking is not allowed in University accommodation and you MUST go outside to smoke in a designated smoking area. Covering or tampering with a smoke detector is a serious offence, as it poses a risk to the lives of those within the accommodation. Students who breach these regulations in order to smoke indoors will be disciplined and fines or other sanctions applied.

Tampering with fire safety equipment, maliciously activating a break glass or other act which compromises the safety of others, or poses a risk to life, is a disciplinary offence. Repeat offenders will receive higher sanctions depending on the level of risk.

If you see someone tampering with a device, please report this to Customer Services at Reception during office hours and Security for out of hours, to keep everyone safe.
