Can I get a refund of my travel costs if I arrive at University to find my lectures/seminars are cancelled due to strike action?

Guidance about travel costs if students arrive at University to find lectures/seminars are cancelled due to strike action.

If you arrive on campus and find that all your scheduled teaching events or supervision sessions are cancelled due to strike action, you can submit a claim for a refund of your travel costs and other expenses.

To claim, complete and submit this form for each date of disrupted teaching or supervision. You can claim for:

  • Public transport costs (e.g., train, bus, metro fares)
  • Mileage/parking charges (from your term-time address to campus and back)
  • Other expenses (e.g., childcare costs)

You must be able to provide evidence of the costs incurred, such as valid receipts or tickets.

Once your claim details have been verified with the relevant school, you will receive an email confirming the outcome and the payment date.

Reimbursement will only be made once it has been possible to confirm that the staff absence was due to industrial action.  This may mean that payment is delayed until after the strike period has ended.

Please ensure your bank details are up to date in the Student Portal to receive any reimbursement.

For questions or support with the form, please contact Industrial.Action.Enquiries@ncl.ac.uk.
