What will happen if a member of my supervisory team is leaving the University through Voluntary Severance?

As you will know, the whole UK university sector is facing significant financial challenges. At Newcastle these have meant that we need to remove £20 million from our recurring salary costs. In the past academic year, we have offered three opportunities for voluntary severance and a total of 257 colleagues have made the decision to leave the University as a result. We recognise that these decisions are both significant and personal, and for many colleagues this will be the end of a long chapter of dedicated service.

The University understands that you will be concerned if a member of your supervisory team will be leaving the University in the upcoming months.  The Graduate Schools are currently working with Academic Units to ensure that where this is the case, supervisory team arrangements are reviewed and where appropriate, alternative supervisory arrangements are considered.

As you will be aware, the University requires that supervision should normally be undertaken by a team consisting of at least two members (normally two members of Newcastle University staff) with the appropriate research skills and knowledge. Where this is not practical, it is possible to have one supervisor from Newcastle University and we could seek to augment the supervisory team by bringing in external supervision.

If you are affected by supervisory team changes, your Academic Unit should consult with you on these potential changes, so that you are aware of what is happening.  If you are concerned at all, please do reach out to your PGR Director or Graduate School so they can provide you with guidance and support in relation to your individual circumstances.
