How can I travel home safely for the winter break?

Guidance for students who are planning to travel home during the student travel window

You can use public or private transport to return home from 3 December 2020, but you must remember to follow government guidance on safe travel. This includes adhering to social distancing rules and wearing a face covering throughout your journey on all forms of public transport.

Many travel companies are now selling tickets for services during the student travel window (3-9 December 2020). You will need to book your travel in advance.

You can buy a ticket for a Megabus here, and simply show your reservation to the driver. All tickets are flexible and can be amended free of charge up to 24 hours before your trip.

Due to social distancing guidelines, you will be guaranteed two seats to yourself, and if you choose to reserve a seat you can double your luggage allowance. The coaches are also kept to a strict cleaning regime, and use filters within the air conditioning systems to kill 99.9% of the virus.

National Express

National Express are offering more tickets during the student travel window, and you can receive 10% off using UNiDAYS. Tickets are flexible and can be amended up to 24 hours before your journey.

The coaches are undergoing enhanced cleaning procedures, and capacity is limited to allow room for social distancing.

LNER have created a dedicated website full of information for students. Their Christmas tickets haven’t been released yet, but you can set up an alert to receive a reminder when they become available.

CrossCountry Trains

CrossCountry Trains will be launching a Student Hub soon, with lots of information on travelling home for Christmas. You can find updates here.
